Fox Derespina Karambit FX-590 Knife Review

The NEW 2013 Fox FX 590 Chiroptera Derespina Karambit from Fox Knives was designed by Rick Derespina of New York City. The 590 model is smaller than that Fox 479 Karambit but it still fits great in the hand... I have large hands not extra large but it fits really nice. Both in the forward and the the reverse grip I get a full four finger grip. I like finger hole on the FX-590 better than the one on the FX-479 model... it's got rounded edges all the way around so there's no sharp edges on it whatsoever.
The N690CO stainless steel blade has a black Teflon coating. The blade is a Talon Hawkbill style with a PlainEdge. I like to refer to it as a Scorpion's tail blade because it looks like the stinger on a scorpion. It's a wicked blade with double scallops and forward Jimping on the thumb ramp to give you a great purchase.
Opening is via dual ambidextrous thumb studs and lockup is via a stainless steel liner lock mechanism. The 420J2 stainless steel pocket clip is another improvement over the previous 479 Karambit model... this one comes forward mounted on the butt end for tip-up carry on the right hand side and it's quad mountable for tip up, tip down, right hand or left hand carry which is a nice improvement. The aggressively textured G10 scales give a great grip and it's light 3 ounce weight makes it comfortable to carry 24-7.
The overall length measures in its 6.1 inches with a blade length of 2.55 inches which should be legal in virtually any municipality within the United States. The blade thickness is .112" and closed at measures in at 5 inches so it 's nice compact and it's very close to the size of the Emerson Combat Karambit.
Stay tuned for more knife reviews.

1st Knife Ever with CPM Cru-Wear Blade: Spyderco Cru-Wear Mili

$
0
0
The 2013 Spyderco Military Cru-Wear Sprint Run knife is the first ever knife to feature Crucible's new red-hot CPM® CRU-WEAR® blade steel!  The "Cruwear Mili Sprintfeatures the conventional Military Model PlainEdge blade-profile with a flat-grind and an oversized round blade hole for quick deployment and even when wearing gloves.

The slim and ergonomic handle scales are peel ply gray G-10 with a nested Michael Walker LinerLock inlaid directly into the scale, which reinforces the lock strength without the adding the bulkiness and weight of full-length internal liners.  Spacers between the scales create a gap running the handle's full length exposing the inside workings for inspection and cleaning.
The handle is slightly flared at both the front and rear and machined onto the blade’s spine and choil are sections of jimping both of which restrain the knife from slipping forward or backward when forcefully cutting or sawing.  Spyderco's jimping is second to none when it comes to providing a comfortable, non-slip grip that gives the user confidence and control over the extremely sharp blade.
A contoured black metal pocket clip is mounted on the forward end for right-hand tip-down carry. Unfortunately the clip is not mountable in any other positions so it is intended primarily as a right hand knife.
The high performance CPM® CRU-WEAR® steel is an air-hardened powdered metallurgy tool steel. Crucible’s original smelted-produced CRU-WEAR® was created as an upgrade to A2 and D2 tool steels, both have earned longevity and respect in the cutlery business for their wear resistance and tough cutting performance.
The powder produced CPM® CRU-WEAR® blade steel offers even greater wear resistance and toughness than A2, D2 and M2. Through powdered steel technology, the steel is made easier to machine with improved resistance to chipping over the original smelted CRU-WEAR®. The powdered variety also attains a higher hardness factor through greater percentages of tungsten and molybdenum that result in a secondary hardening response.
The Cru-Wear Mili is a 1200 piece sprint run!  The rumor has it that Sal Glesser, because of the demand for this knife, upped the production from 1200 to possible 1500-1800 pieces.  This info is not confirmed but most likely true.  If you want one my advise is to act quickly and not let the grass grow under your feet as these will quickly be grabbed up by collectors and a few fortunate knife fans.

Lamoureux Matapedia Hunting Knife

We just got in the first hunting knife from Lamoureux and Sons of Quebec Canada. It's called the Matapedia
The "Matapedia" name comes from the Micmac language, meaning "confluence". For hundreds of years, the native Micmacs tribes of the region hunted moose, as the climate was harsh for agriculture in Gaspesia. They became very successful hunters and many European pioneers coming to the New World learned from them the much-needed skills of field dressing efficiently.
This top-shelf hunting knife is handcrafted by craftsmen in Quebec, Canada and it's construction is comprised of over than 60 different steps and numerous quality controls. The Matapedia skinning knife is a great choice for skinning and processing big game. The small size, ergonomic handle and maneuverability of this model pays tribute to old-time skinning techniques which rendered maximum meat without puncturing the rumen or damaging the skin of big game.
The hollow ground drop point blade is made from S30V stainless steel alloy which is one of the best performing blade steels in terms of cutting performance and edge retention. The bolsters are crafted from Type 416 stainless steel alloy which is used both for its rigidity and resistance to corrosion. The ergonomic handles are sculpted from either beautiful Madagascar Ebony which is one of the hardest woods and because of it's high oil content it is very stable and virtually impossible to rot. The unique shape of the handle has been studied and developed to provide a comfortable and safe grip while in use. The handles are permanently secured to the blade with decorative mosaic pins.
This beautiful hunting knife is protected by a hand stiched full-grain open top leather sheath which is hand crafted at the Lamoureux headquarters.

Specifications:

  • Type: Fixed blade
  • Blade Style: Mid-Point

The 2013 Sebenza 25 Has Landed!

We just got our first shipment of the New 2013 Sebenza 25 from Chris Reeve Knives and boy is it sweet! If my bet is correct, it will win the manufacturers quality award at the 2014 Blade Show.

Twenty-five years have passed since the Sebenza was first manufactured and the Sebenza 25 model commemorates the evolution of the Sebenza knife. Virtually every year has seen small, incremental developments, improvements, changes, and every year the Sebenza has been admired, tested, and copied!

True to the Chris Reeve style the Sebenza 25 maintains it's simplistic function. The 25th Anniversary Sebenza features the sandblasted matte gray handles, typical of all Sebenzas. It comes in a new box and includes a Chris Reeve microfiber cloth.

Features:

  • Large Hollow Grind Technology--the first blade to feature this new grind that blends the best of hollow and flat grinds.
  • Shaped phosphor bronze washer on the lock side brings additional stability to that side of the blade.
  • One-eighth inch ceramic ball acts as the interface between the lock bar and the blade, and doubles to drop into the detent, ensuring the blade stays in place when closed.
  • Larger perforations in the washers reduce friction, store more lubricant and offer space for small dirt particles to move away from the blade/washer interface, helping to prevent blade action from becoming "sticky".
  • 416 Heat treated stainless steel stop pin is interference fit into the lock side of the handle.
  • Asymmetrical pattern thumb serrations on a curved thumb ramp of the blade give excellent purchase.
  • At 0.140" (3.56mm), the blade is more robust blade than previous Sebenza models.

Specifications:

  • Blade Material: CPM S35VN Stainless Steel
  • Blade Hardness: 58-59 RC

The 2013 Tighe Dye Knife by Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) is another great design from custom knifemaker and designer Brian Tighe. The coffin shaped aluminum handle scales have a been bead blasted and then gray anodized for added wear resistance and great looks. 2013 Spyderco Hungarian Ethnic Folder

$
0
0
The Hungarian Folder from Spyderco is a functionally elegant knife design from Hungarian architect Gabor Szakonyi. It pays homage to the traditional ethnic pocket knife of Hungary, the "fejesgorbe" ("header curved"). The Hungarian folder also captures the spirit that typifies Hungarian folk art in the polished black G-10 handle with flared bolster. The blade is flat ground CTS XHP steel with a Spyderco thumb hole and locking liner lock mechanism.
This extraordinary knife represents a melding of modern utilitarian needs and state-of-the-art materials and production methods. Hungary's classic cultural knife is a utilitarian slipjoint folder with a gracefully curved handle and a gently flared front bolster. Reflecting the spirit of Hungary's proud history of traditional folk art, its sleek lines combine form and function into an extremely useful tool that also boasts tremendous character and pride of ownership.
Combining his lifelong passion as a knife enthusiast and collector with his skills as an architectural designer, Szakonyi drafted the original design for the Hungarian on paper before having it translated into steel by a custom knifemaker. He then presented his idea and the handmade prototype of the design to Spyderco's founder Sal Glesser at a trade show in Germany. Impressed by the design, its unique ethnic heritage, and Szakonyi's enthusiasm, Glesser decided to pursue the project and the Spyderco Hungarian Folder was born.

The heart of the Hungarian Folder is its premium CTSXHP blade. Its long, straight spine tapers gently to meet a sweeping, curved cutting edge that offers plenty of "belly" for slicing chores while ensuring an acute, yet durable point. The blade's full-flat grind offers superior edge geometry and friction-free cutting performance, while its trademark Spyderco Round Hole provides swift, positive one-handed opening with either hand.
The Hungarian Folder's handle is a study in style. Built on a foundation of full stainless steel liners, it features contoured, polished G-10 scales and sculpted stainless steel bolsters. The bolsters faithfully capture the signature "header curved" shape of the traditional ethnic design, while expressing it with unmatched precision and attention to detail.
While classic Hungarian folders feature spring-backed slipjoint mechanisms, the Spyderco Hungarian Folder offers the added security of a Walker LinerLock® to lock the blade firmly in the open position. This greatly enhances both the safety and utilitarian function of the knife without compromising its authentic appearance. A pocket clip configured for right-side, tip-up carry further updates the classic design and allows it to be more conveniently carried than a true pocketknife.

The Spyderco Hungarian Folder is a fitting tribute to a unique cultural icon and represents a powerful fusion of traditional artistry and state-of-the-art manufacturing.
